IGI to Issue Grading Reports for Moissanite

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) will partner with Charles & Colvard, the fine jewellery company specialising in moissanite and lab-grown diamonds, to issue grading reports for moissanite loose gemstones and jewellery.

According to IGI, the certificates will feature unique identifiers that tie them back to each laser-inscribed stone. The institute will use the same 4Cs used for diamond grading — cut, clarity, carat and color — along with specific grading measures Charles & Colvard has created.

The new grading reports are designed to boost consumer confidence by providing standardised measures for loose Forever One and Forever Bright moissanite gemstones from Charles & Colvard, ensuring a standard of quality and authenticity for purchasers. Not all moissanite is created equal. The new collaboration with IGI emphasises the company’s commitment to maintaining brand integrity in a market increasingly saturated with false information and counterfeit products, said Charles & Colvard president and CEO Don O’Connell.

“This strategic alliance will bring unparalleled transparency and accountability regarding the quality of moissanite gemstones. We believe our new certifications will allow consumers, retailers, and distributors to further validate the quality and value of our gems while helping to safeguard customers against misinformation and false claims made by other moissanite providers,” said O’Connell.

“This development underscores IGI’s commitment to supporting our industry with detailed, accurate assessments,” said IGI North America president Avi Levy. “It demonstrates our dedication to reinforcing consumer trust in all of the gemstone products they purchase.”

The new moissanite gemstone report, called Forever One, will be available to the trade in a limited capacity from the week of 27 May 2024. Later this year, consumers will also be able to purchase finished jewellery mounted with IGI-certified gemstones from Charles & Colvard.

IGI has 30 laboratories and 19 education facilities in diamond and jewellery centres around the world. IGI provides natural and lab-grown diamond reports, coloured gemstone grading and origin reports, and jewellery identification and appraisals. (Photo courtesy: IGI)
