Dubbed “the greatest jadeite bead necklace of historical importance” by Sotheby’s Hong Kong, the Hutton-Mdivani jadeite bead necklace was sold for HK$214.04 million at Sotheby’s Hong Kong jewellery and jadeite sale on 7 April 2014, breaking the world auction record for any jadeite jewellery and a Cartier jewel. The necklace was once owned by Cartier. It composes of 27 pieces of graduated jadeite beads “of highly translucent bright emerald green colour” ranging in size from 19.20 to 15.40 mm. The clasp is set with rubies and diamonds. The second top lot, a 29.62-carat cushion-shaped oval Burmese Mogok ruby and diamond ring by Cartier, achieved HK$57.24 million which marks a new world auction record for a ruby. The sale fetched over HK$831 million in total.
