Some jewellery designers create jewellery to tell their own stories, some to praise the enchanting nature and some to salute the modern culture, but here is a designer who has a simple philosophy. She simply wants her customers to ‘savour’ the jewellery which brings them a small surprise and a delightful smile.
“A piece of fine jewellery is a comfort food, bringing you joy and relaxing your mind,” she interpreted her jewellery. She is Carolyn Lo, a Taiwanese jewellery designer who established her eponymous jewellery brand four years ago. Lo told Hong Kong Jewellery: “I have never received any formal jewellery design training or worked in any jewellery companies. In the beginning, I used to design jewellery for myself, and then for my friends. As the number of orders grew, I decided to start my own jewellery business.”
For many years, Lo has been fascinated by the brilliance and rich colours of natural gemstones. Together with her knowledge on art, culture and aesthetics, she creates delicate and refreshing jewellery. Insisting on originality and innovation, she infuses her jewellery with oriental elements and western elegance. She expressed: “My favourite gemstone is jade, especially icy jade because every piece of it has its unique shape and colour. I never concern about whether inclusion exists in the gemstones. The overall appearance always comes to my top priority. In addition, opals and diamonds are some common materials in my jewellery design.”
Her favourite piece is a jewellery tree brooch set with 27 top quality icy jadeite cabochons. She described: “The fine icy jadeite cabochons remind me of the moonlight that brightens up the dark. The gold, white and black colours of the jewellery tree sprinkle the nature by reflecting the light. With the flowers, butterflies and woodpeckers showing the vitality, we admire the wonderful life we have.
Over the past four years, Lo focused on the business of her store in Taiwan. This year, she started to exhibit at jewellery fairs in Hong Kong, showcasing her design to global buyers. She told Hong Kong Jewellery: “It is not a pressing need for me to do exhibitions worldwide for the time being. Now I wish to meet more clients who admire my design. Probably I will come to Hong Kong again next March, bringing more jewellery collections to everyone.”
She added: “Delivering made-to-order jewellery is still my focus. In the meantime, by sharing my personal experience with more designers, I would like to encourage them to create their own art. I was very much impressed by the antique jewellery that was made 100 years ago. I hope after 100 years, my jewellery will still be appreciated by people.”
