Hong Kong-based Aaron Shum Jewelry and its brand Coronet made their as well as Hong Kong’s first debut presence at Hall 1, Baselworld 2015. To commemorate the occasion, the company teamed up with Chow Tai Fook, musical instrument maker Gibson Brands and Hong Kong celebrity Mark Lui to create the Coronet diamond guitar. Set with 400 carats of diamonds, the US$2 million guitar has set a new Guinness world record for most valuable guitar.
The unveiling ceremony was held on 20 March 2015 during the Basel fair when Sylvie Ritter, managing director of Baselworld, Peter Holenstein, executive board member of MCH, and a Guinness adjudicator presided over the ceremony. In order to prove the functionality of the lavish instrument, an American musician was invited to play a few chords for the audience.
On 8 April Aaron Shum Jewelry held a cocktail party in Hong Kong. The event, officiated by Gregory So, Secretary of Commerce and Economic Development Bureau and other influential figures in the city, also kicked off the worldwide tour of the diamond guitar.
Production of the guitar has involved a team of 68 people and a total of 700 man-days to complete, according to the company.
