JJA contest identifies elite jewellery designers

Claimed as Japan’s most prestigious jewellery design competition, the JJA Jewellery Design Awards announced the winners of the 2017 edition in August 2017. According to the organiser Japan Jewellery Association (JJA), the contest is not only to promote Japan’s innovative jewellery designs and advanced craftsmanship, but also to discover new talent full of originality and vision for future development of the industry.

JJA awards invited nine judges this year including a guest judge Kansai Yamamoto, the world-famous fashion designer and producer who has been a leading figure in contemporary fashion in Japan for decades.

Chiaki Nakagawa, chairman of JJA said: “A balanced expression of skill, beauty, and quality is indispensable in Japanese jewellery. We realise this through delicate and careful creation making full use of traditional techniques, while maintaining a high level of technology application for functions needed in accessories, incorporating universal design and more.” Here are the highlights of this year’s winners.
