The auction year of 2017 was concluded with rounds of record-breaking sales of important gems and jewellery worldwide where pink diamonds performed incredibly well by fetching jaw-dropping prices at major auctions.
The Pink Star is perhaps one of the biggest highlights of the year. The 59.6-carat oval mixed-cut fancy vivid pink internally flawless diamond was sold to Hong Kong’s Chow Tai Fook (CTF) for a staggering HK$553 million (US$71.2 million) at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in April, a new world auction record for any diamond or jewel. The amazing diamond was renamed as CTF Pink Star in memory of the late Cheng Yu Tung, father of the current chairman Henry Cheng and founder of CTF, and commemorates the brand’s 88th anniversary.
Another pink hero was The Pink Promise, a 14.93-carat fancy vivid pink VVS1 type IIA diamond which fetched HK$250 million at the magnificent jewels autumn sale held by Christie’s Hong Kong in November, matching a world auction record price per carat for a pink diamond first made in 2009 as well as the most expensive jewellery sold by Christie’s in Asia. Also in November de Grisogono’s masterpiece The Art de Grisogono Creation 1, an emerald and diamond necklace set with a 163.41-carat rectangular-cut diamond, the world’s largest flawless D-colour diamond ever auctioned, rocked the Christie’s Geneva sale with CHF33.5 million, making a world auction record for any D-colour flawless diamond. The record price per carat for a fancy intense blue diamond was made by a cushion-shaped fancy intense blue diamond of 7.97 carats sold for CHF12.5 million at Christie’s Geneva in May. For white stones, a 92.15-carat heart-shaped D colour flawless diamond set on La Légende necklace with pearls achieved a world auction record price for a heart-shaped diamond at CHF14.8 million at the same sale.
