SOTHEBY’S Hong Kong spring 2018 important watches sale fetched a total of HK$139 million (US$17.7 million) on 2 April, marking the highest total for the company’s sales in Asia since spring 2015.
The top lot, an important and extremely rare Patek Philippe stainless steel chronograph watch ref 1579 (photo) was sold for about HK$8.8 million. Ten pieces of Rolex Daytona were all sold with a combined total of over HK$15 million. Sotheby’s worldwide head of watches Sam Hines said the market for vintage masters remained strong. Collectors competed for rare and unusual watches, while rare contemporary timepieces fresh-to-the-market performed well.
