Sotheby’s Hong Kong spring 2019

Sotheby’s Hong Kong spring 2019 auction fetched a total of HK$3.78 billion (US$482 million), in which the jewellery and watch sections accounted for HK$313.7 million and HK$134.7 million respectively.

Held on 2 April, the magnificent jewels and jadeite sale was highlighted by an 88.22-carat D colour flawless Type IIa oval brilliant diamond (photo 1) which was sold for HK$108 million to a Japanese private collector who named the precious stone “Manami Star” after his eldest daughter. A superb 13.88-carat sapphire and diamond ring (photo 2) sold for over HK$19 million came as the second top lot, followed by a 10.88-carat D colour IF brilliant-cut diamond ring which fetched nearly HK$14 million.

Claiming the top position of the important watch sale dated 3 April was a Patek Philippe yellow gold perpetual calendar chronograph ref 2499 wristwatch (photo 3) with bracelet which realised nearly HK$12 million. Other major highlights of the sale included four timepieces which set world auction records: Cartier Le Temple Chinois Au Dragon mystery clock (photo 4) sold for nearly HK$8 million (world record for Cartier contemporary clock), Patek Philippe ref 5208P-001 sold for nearly HK$6.9 million (world record for Patek Philippe ref 5208), Patek Philippe Nautilus ref 3700 sold for HK$2.5 million (world record for a steel Nautilus), and George Daniels Millennium yellow gold automatic centre seconds wristwatch sold for nearly HK$2.3 million (world record for George Daniels Millennium).
