HK contest gathers talents worldwide

Winners of the biennial International Jewellery Design Excellence Award (IJDE) organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) were unveiled during the 36th Hong Kong International Jewellery Show. Among 137 designers spanning 21 countries and regions, 15 talents were rewarded under six categories.

American designer Aleksandr Maryaskin captured the Champion of the Champions with his Discovery of Eggcellence, a table ornament that hides a miniature church inside a vintage gold filigree egg nested atop a lapis lazuli base. Every detail of the church which the designer helped restores 30 years ago in Ukraine was retrieved from his memory. The ornament adorned with diamonds, rubies, sapphires and tsavorite garnets consists of three components that work simultaneously to form a part of the piece which took him more than four months to finish. This is the third award he took home with his excellent design following the First Place in Hollowware in 2014 and the Saul Bell Design Award in 2017.

The Craftsmanship Award was presented to Ukrainian designer Borys Palamarchuk. His diamond-studded enamel ring Koi won the Best Jewelry of the Year in 2017. The koi carp swimming against the current beneath the sun symbolises perseverance and persistence in achieving ambitious goals. The fish represents longevity as well. The oldest koi, Hanako lived for a startling 226 years in Japan.

Hong Kong designer Sarah Zhuang won the Innovative and Uniqueness in Design Award. Her piece Urban Reflection captured modern skyscrapers of Hong Kong in four rings that can be worn separately or together to form a picture of the city’s iconic skyline with water reflection.
