New contest announces winners

The inaugural JNA Jewellery Design Competition unveiled the three winners out from 15 finalists during the 2019 June Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair took place at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). Organised by JNA of Informa Markets and sponsored by Crossfor Co Ltd, Platinum Guild International (PGI) and Tahitian Pearl Association Hong Kong (TPAHK), champions received a trophy, certificate and cash prize of US$2,000. The winning creations will be showcased at the September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair.

The three categories were dancing stone, platinum and Tahitian pearl with respective themes of new fashion tech, platinum attitude, and asymmetric perfection. Rebecca Cheng, chief operation officer of Rio Pearl, founding member of TPAHK, explained reason behind the theme of asymmetric perfection: “There's no telling the shape of a Tahitian pearl before it is taken out of the oyster. It can be either round, oval, drop, button, circled or baroque. But there is beauty in a pearl's asymmetry, where perfection lies not in a full circle but in the character and dynamism that fancy shapes bestow on jewellery designs.”

A total of 2,588 entries from jewellery designers and students spanning 39 countries and regions such as China, the United States, Japan and Egypt were received. With 940 entries, the Tahitian pearl category was the biggest battlefield, followed by platinum and dancing stone categories that attracted 935 and 713 submissions respectively.
