The 10th Chinese Jewellery Design Contest cum the first-ever Gem Testing Technician Skills Contest co-organised by National Gemstone Testing Center (NGTC), China Employment Training Technical Instruction Center (CETTIC) and Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China (GAC) held its awards ceremony in China on 15 December 2019. Among 20,000 designers, craftsmen and technicians participated, over 100 were awarded on stage across three categories, namely jewellery design, craftsmanship technique and assurance technician skill. The large-scale contest that went on for one year was divided into three stages: preliminary in 26 cities, semi-final in seven major provinces and final stage, which took place in Beijing. NGTC president Ye Zhibin: “The contest is based in but not bounded by China. The contest advocates the integration of natural wonder and humanity, backed by originality, precision and quality as core elements. It aims to build a mechanism for training and highly skilled talent selection and promote the development of China's jewellery technology and culture.”
The Gem Testing Technician Skills Contest was separated into three groups: model making, wax casting and mounting. Test on theory and skill accounted for 20 percent and 80 percent of marks respectively. NGTC director in publicity and promotion Meng Xiaojun shared the story of a professor pouring a great deal of money into a piece of jewellery, which later found is a treated one, inspired NGTC to organise such contest. Gemstone that carries wearer’s wishes tolerates no artificiality. The centre sets its heart on hand-picking technician elites to enhance consumer confidence and protect the industry’s reputation. A total of 15 technicians won awards. Hou Peng of Chow Tai Fook Jewellery (Shenzhen) got the champion. NGTC will apply the ‘national technician’ for him. This year, the Chinese Jewellery Design Contest added a youth category. More than 15,000 students from 400 universities submitted entries, among them 40 winners were awarded. Participants’ themes happened to focus on traditional characteristics. Finished jewellery group champion winning piece ‘whooping crane’ adopted traditional gold thread winding to represent crane winging up in the sky while the 2rd ruuner-up of drawings group, ‘breathtaking ethnic minority style’ blended in Yunnan ethnic minorities features.
During the award ceremony, NGTC deputy director Liang Zhenjie and SF Express special logistics director Zhang Hui presided over a launching ceremony of the WeChat programme for examination services delivery. Consumers can enter the programme via scanning a WeChat QR code, insert details of the jewellery to be examined and select a testing centre. SF will pick up the goods and send them to the testing centre. After testing, items will be returned to the consumers. Liang Zhenjie said in the past customers had to pick up the examined jewellery by themselves, which was time-consuming with high traffic and lodging expenses. Also, customers were unable to check the status of the goods immediately. Now, the programme offers an effective and safe alternative for both jewellers and customers.
