Debuted by the Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association (HKJJA), Hong Kong Fei Cui Design Biennial Contest has revealed the winning pieces at DesignInspire 2019 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 5 December 2019. Forty-one finished jewellery and 115 jewellery drawings were shortlisted for final selection among over 300 entries submitted by designers, students and fei cui aficionado from Hong Kong, mainland China and other countries and regions of the world.
The inaugural design competition adopts fei cui as a medium of jewellery creation. Themed “Connections”, participants were asked to create jewellery, accessories, ornaments or art installations with fei cui which embraces historical heritage and contemporary spirit by application of traditional craftsmanship and innovative technology. Led by Samuel Kung, director of Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) Shanghai and president of Jadeite Collection Limited, the judging panel was formed by 10 industry and design heavyweights: Ho Koon Wan of Chow Tai Fook (CTF), Fung Chiang of Christie’s Hong Kong, Kevin Yeung of Hong Kong Fashion Designers Association, Kevin Yeung of Hong Kong Fashion Designers Association, Pinky Seung of International Jewellery Designer Association, Billy Lau and Ken Lo of HKJJA, Siwakorn Yoksirimanee of Gold Uni Jewellery Company Limited and Sophia Chong of Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC).
To stimulate younger generations’ appetite for the aesthetics of fei cui, the organiser launched the Youth’s Favourite Fei Cui Design Award. Audience under 45 years old were invited to vote for the designs that caught their eyes among the winning finished jewellery. Miss Hong Kong 2018 and Miss Chinese International Pageant 2019 Hera Chan was invited as the honourable guest to cast the first vote for the Youth’s Favourite Fei Cui Design Award together with Victor Chan, HKJJA vice-chairman. Proud with Elegance took home the award as well as the champion of open group (finished product): creative arts unsymmetrical chandelier earrings.
After hours and rounds of thorough examination, 18 finished jewellery and 36 drawings across six categories were selected as winners. Two pieces by DreamMix Jewelry’s Li Li, the Red Flame parure and the Twins pendant necklace took the first runner-up and merit award respectively in the open group (finished product): creative arts. Winners may be invited to showcase in Christie’s Hong Kong, Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art, Loupe or HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, or even go under hammer at Christie’s Hong Kong.
