The Jewelers Board of Trade (JBT) reported the industry continued to shrink despite the number of newcomers jumped 30 percent, yet outnumbered by the 1,064 quitting market practitioners in North American last year namely 893 retailers, 106 wholesalers and 65 manufacturers due to ceased operations, merged or were acquired, or filed for bankruptcy.
JBT president Richard Weisenfeld said the statistics excluded new businesses had not registered with JBT, particularly the smaller and designer-oriented items that sell through non-traditional channels like Instagram and Etsy, which might have affected the accuracy of the result. JBT wishes to get those players more involved.
