Gübelin Gem Lab has launched the first coloured gemstone blockchain, Provenance Proof blockchain tracks every step along the entire supply chain from mine to end-customer. “The Provenance Proof Blockchain is a truly inclusive solution, applicable to any type of gemstone and open to any stakeholder of the gemstone and jewellery community who is ready to embrace transparency,” Gübelin said. There are no charges for both the data contribution and access to the blockchain solution and open for all industry participants.
The technology was developed together with Everledger, a part of the long-term programme established by the lab, Provenance Proof initiative and tested with emeralds from Fura Gems' Coscuez Emerald Mine, in Colombia. Fura Gems will combine the blockchain technology with nanoparticles of the Emerald Paternity Test, which act as physical tracers.
