Christie’s Geneva spring sales fetch CHF 77 million

16-05-2019

Christie’s spring luxury auctions held 13-15 May in Geneva fetched a total of CHF 77.2 million (US$77.2 million), including CHF 62.1 million from the jewellery sale and CHF 11.5 million from watches.

The magnificent jewels sale with over 270 lots was highlighted by a Harry Winston 22.86-carat cushion-shaped Burmese ruby ring (photo 1) which realised nearly CHF7.2 million, tripling its pre-sale estimate. The Siba Diamond, a 118.05-carat fancy yellow VS2 cushion brilliant-cut diamond (photo 2) was sold for CHF 7 million, came as the second-top lot. An important natural pearl necklace of 110 natural pearls achieved about CHF 5.8 million, doubling its estimate.

The top lot of the rare watches auction went to a pink gold Rolex ref 6062 Stelline triple calendar with moon phase and a star dial (photo 3) selling for CHF 975,000. According to the auction house, what makes the watch special is the design and the fact that the production for the reference was extremely limited, around 50 pieces in pink gold case, and only around 10 featuring the star dial. John Reardon, Christie’s international watches department head, said that Rolex extends its dominance in the international auction market where rare vintage and modern timepieces are sought after. And the provenance issue has become a crucial factor in determining the final prices. (Photo courtesy: Christie’s Geneva)
