GIA reports natural-synthetic diamond

22-5-2019 The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has discovered a layer of 0.10 carats CVD synthetic diamond has grown on a 0.64-carat natural diamond.

The greenish-blue CVD layer piled on the dark blue natural diamond and forms a fancy greyish greenish blue hue as a whole. GIA assumed the resulting colour was the main reason behind growing the CVD layer on top of the natural diamond, followed the extra weight gained could also be a factor.

A similar hybrid diamond previously reported in 2017 was a 0.33-carat fancy blue diamond featured a CVD overgrowth. Research associate Troy Ardon and analytics technician Garrett McElhenny said in GIA’s laboratory note: “With the second of these composites seen at GIA, this could be a new type of product entering the market. Earth-grown diamonds with synthetic diamond grown on the surface require extra scrutiny due to the presence of natural-looking features, both spectroscopic and geological. Careful inspection still reveals the presence of synthetic indicators, which expose the true nature of the diamond.”
