In a bid to increase confidence of the trade in natural diamonds, a seminar titled “Decoding diamonds” was held yesterday in Hong Kong by several major industry organisations in the region.
The two-hour seminar was co-organised by the National Gemstone Testing Center (NGTC), the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong (DFHK), the Gemstone Examination and Marking Society, Limited (GEMS) and Goldway Technology Limited.
In his welcoming speech, chairman of DFHK Chow Kit Shing pointed out the importance of credibility, traceability and sustainability in the diamond trade which relied heavily on trust and integrity in the past. He also gave a brief update on DFHK's retail-focused initiative ‘Natural Diamond Quality Assurance’ Mark Scheme (NDQA Mark Scheme) which has successfully given consumers confidence in buying natural diamonds from local retailers.
NGTC’s chief scientist Dr Lu Taijin and Shenyang laboratory director Song Zhonghua, together with Dr Cheng Juan, chief scientist from Goldway, were invited to share their insight and professional knowledge in production, identification and grading of synthetic diamonds in China, laboratory testing of synthetic diamonds and the latest technology in diamond marking. The valuable sharing attracted rounds of inspiring discussions between the speakers and the audience.
