Automatic melee screener in service at BDB, India

The Gemmological Institute of India (GII) and the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) provided an automated melee screening (AMS) machine to the Diamond Detection and Resource Centre (DDRC) at the Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) on 2 August 2014. BDB president Anoop V Mehta and Rosy Blue (India) Ptv Ltd founder and chairman Arunkumar Mehta conducted the inauguration.

According to Vipul Shah, chairman of GJEPC, the machine can rapidly detect synthetic stones in parcels of small diamonds ranging from 0.01-0.20 carats in a cost effective manner. It addresses a market need for rapid and affordable detection equipment for smaller sized diamonds which is of immense benefit for India.

“The DDRC will enable small traders, who cannot afford the machine, to get their parcels tested at an affordable cost. This will be a great support to the diamond industry,” said Shah.
