Alrosa has unearthed a rough diamond weighing over 232 carats, the largest gem-quality diamond found by Alrosa in the past three years, at Udacnhaya kimberlite pipe in the Yakutia region of Siberia.
The octahedron rough with yellowish hue dug up on 19 October. “Such large gem-quality crystals are extremely rare. Of course, they are present at ALROSA's deposits, but we have not seen them since 2016, when two diamonds weighing over 200 carats were mined,” said Alrosa deputy CEO Evgeny Agureev.
The second large diamond weighed 191.46 carats, mined at the same pipe this year was discovered earlier January. The pipe’s diamond output reached 2.385 million carats in the first nine months of this year.
