Mastercard SpendingPulse indicates online sales in the United States grow almost 19 percent with jewellery revenue goes up for around 8 percent while department stores suffer a 1.8 percent sales decline, compared year-ago from 1 November to 24 December.
Overall, the holiday retail sales increased three percent, excluding automotive. E-commerce made up 14.6 percent of the total sale and total apparel took the highest growth by category, increased 17 percent.
"E-commerce sales hit a record high this year with more people doing their holiday shopping online," said senior advisor for Mastercard Steve Sadove. Analysts had expected healthy sales gains this holiday season, backed by a robust economy and low unemployment.
