The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has suspended diamond sealing services available across all locations indefinitely after a number of GIA sealing packets had been damaged by third parties.
GIA found that "the diamonds originally enclosed in the compromised packets had been replaced with HPHT (high-pressure, high-temperature) treated natural diamonds”. The institute is awaiting an investigation of the fraud source and calling who has concerns may submit the unopened packet of GIA-sealed diamonds to any GIA laboratory for chargeless verification services.
A verification letter will be issued after GIA confirmed the diamond inside the sealing packet matches the original report. If the diamond does not match the report, GIA will issue a new report with a correct result and return diamond unsealed.
