Baselworld organiser MCH Group refused to refund 100 percent of exhibitors’ fees for the cancelled 2020 edition has angered the exhibitors.
The organiser announced two options for registered participants on 3 April to either carry forward 85 percent of payment on the cancelled fair to Baselworld 2021, with the other 15 percent to be kept by MCH Group to “serve to partially offset out-of-pocket costs already accrued” or a 30 percent payment refund with 40 percent rolling over to the next edition and the outstanding 30 percent goes to MCH Group. Exhibitors are given a tight deadline set before 30 April to make their decision.
Hubert du Plessix, president of the Baselworld exhibitor’s committee wrote a letter to MCH Group describing the arrangement was lack of consideration and demanded demands a full refund of fees exhibitor paid for the cancelled fair to encourage exhibitors who can participate in a future edition of Baselworld. The show’s managing director Michel Loris-Melikoff defended the decision the next day, highlighting that US$10 million was invested to upgrade the fair. A full refund would jeopardise Baselworld.
