Alrosa will suspend mining operations at two assets, Aikhal and Zarya from 15 May to 30 September and to 30 December respectively.
The duo account for around seven percent of Alrosa’s diamond output in carat produced a total of 2.6 million carats in 2019. "The decision was taken due to the decrease in demand and sales for diamonds, as the major consuming economies are struggling with economic headwinds caused by the global spread of COVID-2019 virus," stated Alrosa in a press release.
The company’s production forecast for this year of 34.2 million carats will be brought up at the board meeting in May for adjustment. Alrosa has high diamond inventories of 21.1 million carats of the end of March which “will last us for more than one year” said CEO Sergei Ivanov.
