Edward Asscher succeeds Stephane Fischler, whose two-year term of World Diamond Council (WDC) president comes to an end, focusing on promoting natural diamond’s potential to act as a catalyst for social and economic development.
He is currently WDC's vice-president and served a term as president from 2014 to 2016. “I am honoured to be able to serve once again as WDC President and to head a body whose entire purpose is to protect the integrity of the natural diamond, and also that of the industry that mines, manufactures and sells it, enabling all stakeholders to gain maximum benefit from revenues generated, especially in the developing world,” said Asscher.
After 50 years heading Royal Asscher Diamond, he stood down from the family business but not the industry. He was also president of the International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA) and president of the International Diamond Council (IDC).
De Beers Group international relations and ethical initiatives senior vice president Feriel Zerouki will be the first woman to hold WDC vice president. She will automatically become WDC president at the end of Asscher’s two-year term.
