A group of 50 jewellery industry companies launched the Art Smith Memorial Scholarship Foundation and co-found a US$50,000 funding within two days for black students who would like to attend jewellery design program to apply for scholarships and mentorships at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).
The foundation name pays homage to influential mid-century black jewellery designer Art Smith. He created unique geometric shaped jewellery inspired by African motifs that interact with human bodies. The jewellery was mainly made of silver, brass and copper.
For Future Reference’s Randi Molofsky, who initiated the education-based idea said: “The lack of black jewellery designers in the jewelry industry is, frankly, a major issue, and the change starts with access.” The endowment is now open for donations of any amount.
