After the successful webinars on diamonds and gold, the Hong Kong Jewellers' & Goldsmiths' Association (HKJGA) held an informative online seminar on pearls last Friday.
The event was co-hosted by HKJGA chairman Kent Wong and Dominic Mok, principal of the Asian Gemmological Institute and Laboratory Limited (AGIL). Yvonne Pong, director of Wing Hang South Sea Pearl Company Limited, was invited to share some interesting knowledge of cultured pearls including South Sea, Akoya and freshwater pearls. She also brought with her some samples of white, golden and black South Sea pearl oysters, loose pearls and jewellery.
According to Pong, quality South Sea pearls are rare and precious due to its limited supply. It takes two or more harvests to form a perfect pearl strand of matching size, colour, shape and lustre. She said pearl jewellery is now a fashion item ideal for everyday wear.
