A 13.15-carat all-diamond ring called the Beaufort has been revealed by Reid Mackie the vice president of Mountain Province marketing for diamonds, as the third ring crafted from a single diamond and the first to use natural diamond.
The ring was made of a 19.6-carat bluish-gray rough diamond unearthed in Canada. The crafting process required laser technology and took two years to finish. The diamond owes grey hue thanks to the graphite needles trapped during formation deep below the earth’s surface.
In 2018, Apple’s former chief design officer Jony Ive launched a lab-grown all-diamond ring and sold to an anonymous buyer for US$256,250. Dutch Diamond Technologies created a a 3.87-carat chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond ring last year.
The ring has been sent to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) for evaluation. GIA senior analytics technician Stephanie Persaud analytics manager Paul Johnson and chief quality officer John King said it is common to find solid carved rings of jade and wood, which were traditionally worn as symbols of status or wedding rings signifying eternity. Beaufort is the first all-diamond ring submitted to GIA for identification.
