Gem Diamonds yields 442-carat diamond

25-8-2020

Gem Diamonds recovers a 442-carat at the Letšeng mine in Lesotho. The stone has been sent to Antwerp for evaluation and will be on sale next month.

Clifford Elphick, CEO of Gem Diamonds said the rough is one of the world’s largest gem quality diamonds to be recovered this year and once again proves Letšeng mine’s ability to produce large and high-quality diamonds. The last two diamonds from the mine which weighing over 100-carat were a 183-carat and 114-carat white diamond in February and March respectively.

Elphicksaid a portion of the proceeds would be used to fund a ‘special community project’, as agreed with the miner’s partner, the Government of Lesotho. Citing a research note from BMO Capital Markets Edward Sterck, the diamond could be sold for as much as US$18 million.
