Diamond sales of two giants improve

15-9-2020

Latest diamond sales of Alrosa and De Beers show an increasing demand for diamond amid the approaching of holiday season.

Alrosa sold133 rough diamonds with a total weight of 2,173 carats and 100 rough diamonds totaling 1,860 carats in Belgium and Israel respectively this September. The auctions brought Alrosa US$20.7 million in revenue. The miner deputy CEO Evgeny Agureev said the results confirmed the demand for high-quality rough diamonds. the total proceeds at the Israeli auction significantly exceeded the reserve price.

De Beers’ provisional rough diamond sales figure from 19 August – 10 September are US$320 million, nearly three times more than the previous US$116 million sales between 27 July and 13 August. The revenue, however, is US$33 million less than the same cycle last year.

The group CEO Bruce Cleaver commented on the improvement: “Overall industry sentiment has become more positive as jewellers in the key US and Chinese consumer markets gained confidence ahead of the important year-end holiday season, supported by strong bridal diamond jewellery demand across markets. Accordingly, we saw a recovery in rough diamond demand in the seventh sales cycle of the year.”
