Goldsmiths’ Company Charity has presented the Goldsmiths’ Company Apprentice of the Year Award to Alexander Wood in its first-ever virtual ceremony.
Alexander completed a four-year diamond-mounting apprenticeship with Nathanial Groves after learning basic jewellery making, silversmithing and stone setting skills in the Goldsmiths’ Centre’s foundation programme.
“Most importantly, this award is based in-part upon peer review, and Alex proved to be the standout candidate to the other apprentices during the judging process,” Peter Taylor, director of the Goldsmiths’ Centre commented. He was nominated by the Goldsmiths’ Company apprenticeship team and Nathanial Groves.
During his time as an apprentice, he won a gold medal in the WorldSkills UK competition and represented the UK in the WorldSkills competition in Abu Dhabi in 2017. He was ranked the 7th out of 17 competitors of the fine jewellery-making category, with a Medallion of Excellence at the WorldSkills competition in Abu Dhabi.
Alexander shared his dream: “My aspirations have always been to be the best jeweller I can, with an interest in starting my own workshop and working around the world.”
