Despite Human Rights Watch (HRW) finds improvements in human rights and environmental protection in sourcing gold and diamonds since the last survey conducted two years ago, “consumers still don't have adequate assurances that their jewellery comes free of human rights abuses”.
15 companies, which generate more than US$40 billion revenue annually, about 15 percent of global jewellery sales, were assessed, including Cartier, Chow Tai Fook, Pandora and Tiffany. None of the 15 could be ranked “excellent”. Tiffany and Pandora were ranked “strong” for taking significant steps toward responsible sourcing. Pandora was ranked higher than two years ago. The jeweller aims to use only recycled silver and gold by 2025.
The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) responded to the report that ethical standards should be maintained in challenging times.
