De Beers has set 12 goals, vows to be environmental, ethically and socially responsible across its value chain by 2030.
David Prager, De Beers’ executive vice president and chief brand officer, commented on the ambitious targets: “what we have found in the past several years is that consumers — particularly in luxury — are far more interested in the role the products play in creating a better world, in protecting the planet and in improving people’s lives.”
Through its CarbonVault initiative, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would be captured and locks away in kimberlite for a process called ‘mineral carbonation’ to achieve its carbon neutral goal. Besides, it promises to halve its water footprint and nurtures biodiversity.
The miner will provide the country of origin and authenticity for every diamond it unearths and sells via the blockchain-based Tracr platform. Its mines span wo continents and four countries – Botswana, Canada, Namibia and South Africa.
In a bid to offer equal opportunity, including gender parity, De Beers will support 10,000 women entrepreneurs and help educate 10,000 girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects.
