Christie’s New York Magnificent Jewels sale held yesterday fetched a total of US$44,583,875, with 95 percent of the lots sold by value, 91 percent sold by lot.
Sapphires from Kashmir stole the limelight of the sale which was highlighted by a bracelet set with a 43.10-carat Kashmir sapphire and 67.90 carats of D colour IF diamond (photo 1) sold for US$6,030,000 by Harry Winston. Nayla Hayek, Harry Winston CEO, said that the superb piece will be part of their Legacy Collection. Another star lot was a cabochon Kashmir sapphire ring of 21.72 carats by Van Cleef & Arpels (photo 2) from 1917 which achieved US$1,110,000. An art deco Kashmir sapphire of 12.64 carats and diamond brooch by Cartier (photo 3) realised US$1,530,000.
Also a corundum, padparadscha sapphire kicked off rounds of fierce biddings at the sale. The Du Pont sapphire ring (photo 4) set with a 24.58-carat padparadscha, for instance, was sold for US$930,000.
The sale specially featured a custom-ring by JAR for Elizabeth Taylor’s 70th birthday which realised US$62,500, seven times of its estimate. Proceeds are designated for the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation (ETAF). (Photo courtesy: Christie's)
