Alrosa announced robust sales of rough and polished diamonds in December totalled US$521.6 million, a 43% jump in total diamond sales, driven by the continued strong demand from the cutting and polishing sector.
Proceeds from rough and polished diamond sales in December were US$470.3 million and US$51.2 million respectively. The whopping revenue from polished diamond was fueled by the stockpile and the 14.83 carats purple-pink diamond Spirit of the Rose sold for US$26.6 million at Sotheby’s.
“We expect January sales to return to their average for this period, and figure on a stable demand and sales during the first quarter,” said Alrosa deputy CEO Evgeny Agureev.
The Russian miner summed up its total rough and polished diamond sales for the year of 2020 slipped 16 percent to US$2,802 million, including US$2,652 million of rough and US$150 million of polished.
