The International Jewellery Confederation (Cibjo) has just published a new guide for classifying saltwater and freshwater natural and cultured pearls, serving as an educational tool for both consumers and the jewellery trade.
Titled CIBJO Guide for Classifying Natural Pearls and Cultured Pearls, the 62-page illustrated document provides an overview of the various natural and cultured pearl categories all over the globe, lists and describes the major pearl-producing molluscs and the pearls they yield. It also provides an exhaustive explanation of the leading cultured pearl types in the market with details of the species, origin, features and production.
Designed to complement the CIBJO Pearl Blue Book, the guide is a multinational collaboration of the CIBJO Pearl Commission, Paspaley Pearling, and the Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (Danat).
Cibjo’s president Gaetano Cavalieri said: “The CIBJO Guide for Classifying Natural Pearls and Cultured Pearls is a tremendous resource, intended to provide consumers and the trade with accurate and easily-to-comprehend information about this increasingly popular jewellery category.”
