A delegation of 20 Antwerp-based diamond company CEOs visited Angola, under the arrangement by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) and the Angolan Ministry of Minerals and Petroleum (MIREMPET), to encourage close cooperation with Angola’s diamond industry.
Over 80 percent of the world's rough diamonds were traded in Antwerp, however, only 10 percent of Angola’s rough are being sold in Antwerp. The minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas Diamantino Azevedo called on Belgian businesses to invest in the country's diamond industry. He also expressed his anticipation for the partnership with AWDC, Angola Diamond Stock Market, a free trade area which is expected to come into experimental action in 2022.
Jozef Smets, ambassador at Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that Antwerp’s businesses are willing to foster business relationship with Angolan government as they know the country's potential. Angola is the world's sixth-biggest diamond producer.
