GIA's diamond sealing service suspended

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) recently announced its suspended diamond sealing service effective on 3 November 2014.

The action is due to the fact that GIA has received a sealed diamond for verification that did not match the data label in its sealing packet. At this stage, the institute is examining the circumstances surrounding the submission to determine the source of the sealing packet with an outside corporate investigation firm.

It is said that the diamond sealing service was launched around 2009. Client’s diamond is sealed in a secure package with its key grading details at the completion of the grading process. The service is available for loose D-to-Z and coloured diamonds.

GIA expressed that clients with concerns about sealed diamonds may submit the unopened sealing packet to them for examination at no charge.

In addition, the issuance of duplicate reports is also suspended at all locations at the same time. If any GIA report is lost, stolen or damaged, clients may obtain report information through GIA’s online report check service or by requesting a data document.
