IGI New York commits to carbon neutrality by 2022

4-6-2021

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) New York aims to be the first carbon-neutral gemological laboratory by 2022 and become certified for that.

“For six months, IGI New York will be closely engaged with SCS Global Services to learn about our operations and how to effectively become a green location,” IGI North America President Avi Levy said. The cooperation will begin with an evaluation of its greenhouse gas emissions from June 2020 to May 2021.

Its strategy towards the goal is carbon offset, which means to compensate for an equivalent emission made elsewhere. Compensation methods include afforestation and land restoration, according to Carbon Offset Guide. It plans to renew the carbon neutral certification annually.

SCS Global Services works with other jewellery industry players such as the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). It ensures RJC members’ compliance with RJC standards for environmentally and socially responsible practices throughout the jewellery supply chain since 2014.
