Gübelin Gem Lab introduces a new rating system for the big three coloured gemstones: Gübelin Gemstone Rating.
The newly launched system fills the gap of its traditional gemological report, which only states the examined stone’s identity, authenticity, geographic origin and presence of any treatments. It indicates the quality of the stone with Gübelin Points and labels as below:
75-79.9 points: fair
80-84.9 points: good
85-89.9 points: fine
90-92.4 points: superior
95-97.4 points: outstanding
Gübelin Gemstone Rating makes reference to Robert Parker’s wine rating system. It has judged wines around the world on the basis of a 100-point scale. The system was built on a database compiled over decades recording more than 28,000 gemstones.
The Swiss gemstone laboratory hopes that the new rating system will boost consumer confidence. “There are end-consumers who are interested in the beauty of coloured gems, but they hesitate in buying them because they are difficult to understand, and so they move to diamonds,” its chief executive Raphael Gübelin said.
