Bonhams Los Angeles will put more than 300 pieces of jewellery from 30 important artists like Picasso under hummer under the category Wearable Art: Jewels from The Crawford Collection on 12 October.
The auction gathers pieces by fine artists (Picasso, Max Ernst, Jean Arp), American modernist jewellery designers (Art Smith, Betty Cooke, Sam Kramer), Scandinavian crafters (Georg Jensen, Björn Weckström), Native American artists (Charles Loloma, Jesse Monongya), as well as Taxco jewellery from William Spratling and Antonio Pineda.
The lots are from collectors Byron and Jill Crawford. The latter travelled the world, scouring flea markets, scrutinizing works in galleries, and meeting with individual artists to personally select each piece. This was the era before online bidding or Google searches. Emily Waterfall, Bonhams Los Angeles head of jewellery commented they are wearable sculptures.
