Christie’s November magnificent jewels auction in Geneva fetched a total of CHF53,661,500 (US$59,027,650) yesterday, with 11 lots sold for over a million Swiss Franc.
Seen a global participation from 32 countries and regions, the sale was led by the historic diamond bracelet pair ‘The Marie Antoinette Diamonds’ pre-owned by the last queen of France Marie-Antoinette (photo 1). The magnificent jewellery made by Boehmer in 1776 was sold for CHF7.5 million, setting the highest price for a jewel owned by Marie-Antoinette.
The second highest sale was achieved by a pear-brilliant-cut, D-colour, potentially IF diamond of 55.50 carats (photo 2) which fetched CHF4.8 million. A cushion-shaped Burmese ruby and diamond brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels (photo 3) came as another highlight sold for CHF4.2 million.
International head of Christie’s Jewellery Rahul Kadakia said: “A very dynamic saleroom coupled with strong online and telephone bids from around the world, resulted in lively bidding and a very high sell-through rate of 93% by lot. Queen Antoinette’s Diamonds captured the world’s attention and achieved a fitting result for such a magnificent Royal Jewel!” (Photo courtesy: Christie's)
