The Asian Gemmological Institute and Laboratory (AGIL) held its 31st anniversary dinner and FGA/DGA diploma award presentation ceremony on 11December 2014. Joey Wong, one of the graduates, received an outstanding student award from AGIL’s principal Dominic Mok celebrating her achievement of the Deeks Diamond Prize 2014 as the world’s best theory candidate of the year in the diamond diploma examinations of Gem-A (the Gemmological Association of Great Britain). Wong is the fourth AGIL student winning the champion of a kind, said Mok.
Besides structured programmes, said Mok during his speech, in 2014 AGIL has also jointly organised symposiums and courses with professional groups and jewellers. For instance, the institute co-organised the AGIL 2014 International Gemmological Conference with the Asia Pacific Gemmologist Society Limited (APGS) during the September Hong Kong jewellery show. Since inception, AGIL has over 5,000 students and provided the trade with more than 500 gemmologists specialised in gemstone and diamond identification and testing.
Guests included Professor Shek Chan Hung, department of physics and materials science of the City University of Hong Kong, Lee Fu Wai, founder-chairman of the Hong Kong & Kowloon Jade Merchants Union Association, Kenny Ho, vice chairman of the Hong Kong Jade Association, Wang Xiangxin, general vice-chairman of the Guangdong Golden Jewelry and Jade Industry’s Association, professor Chan Lung Sang of the University of Hong Kong, Li Baojun, vice-chairman of the National Gemological Training Centre (NGTC), etc.
