A 160-carat, type IIa high-quality white rough diamond, has recently been unearthed in Angola by Lucapa Diamond Company.
This 160-carat new addition is now the sixth-largest stone the deposit has yielded, also marking the 28th diamond over 100 carats from the Lulo diamond mine where Lulo Rose was discovered.
The rough is from the same alluvial mining block as Lulo Rose, a 170-carat pink rough diamond recovered by the same company previously in July. According to the company, Lulo Rose could be the largest pink diamond found in 300 years.
Recently, Lucapa transitioned to mining rough from the lezirias, or flood plain area, of the site, which has led to the recovery of larger diamonds, it said. The rough was recovered by Sociedade Mineira Do Lulo (SML).
“SML transitioned to the lezirias (flood plains) towards the end of the first half of 2022. Diamond recoveries have been strong with over 100 ‘specials’ or diamonds weighing more than 10.8 carats recovered in the last two months,” said Stephen Wetherall, managing director of Lucapa.
