Pantone Color Institute recently announced its Color of the Year 2023: Viva Magenta 18-1750. Brave and fearless, it is a shade rooted in nature, and a pulsating colour whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative, said the colour institute.
In a video introducing the new colour of the year, Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, said the new colour “vibrates with vim and vigour”. “Powerful and empowering, Viva Magenta is an animated red that encourages experimentation and self-expression without restraint,” she continued. “It is a nuanced crimson red tone. It presents a balance between warm and cool. It is also a hybrid colour, one that comfortably straddles the physical and virtual, evocative of our multidimensional world.”
“It is audacious, it is witty, inclusive of all. Viva Magenta welcomes everyone and anyone with the same rebellious spirit. Assertive but not aggressive, a carmine red that takes what we like to call a ‘fist in a velvet glove’ approach,” said she.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone Color Institute said: “In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.”
