Signet further slides in NRF ranking of top 100 retailers

In a notable shift within the retail landscape, Signet Jewelers, the world’s largest diamond jewellery retailer, has slipped to 69th place in the 2025 National Retail Federation (NRF) ranking of the top 100 retailers, down from 67th last year and a significant drop from its 2023 position of 56th. This ranking, based on annual sales, highlights ongoing challenges faced by the jewellery specialist amidst changing economic conditions.

The NRF’s recently released data indicates that the decline in Signet's ranking can be attributed to a combination of factors affecting consumer confidence and luxury item purchases in the States. The company, which oversees well-known brands such as Kay, Zales, Jared, and James Allen, has faced pressure on profit margins related to its strategies involving both lab-grown and natural diamonds, leading to reduced sales volumes.

While Signet remains the only jewellery retailer in the top 100, its competitors in the jewellery sector are performing well in different contexts. Notable placements include Macy’s at 24th, Kohl’s at 31st, Nordstrom at 33rd, and J C Penney at 67th.

Walmart continues to lead the pack, maintaining its first-place position, followed by Amazon, Costco, The Kroger Co, and The Home Depot in the top five.

The NRF estimates, derived from publicly available data, reveal that Signet experienced a 5-percent decline in States. sales in 2024, amounting to US$6.21 billion in States revenue and US$6.86 billion in worldwide sales. (Photo courtesy: Signet Jewelers)
