The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) is set to unveil a remarkable exhibition, “Marie Antoinette Style”, opening in September. This groundbreaking showcase will be the first of its kind in the UK, dedicated solely to the iconic French queen, renowned not only for her tumultuous life but also for her exquisite taste in jewellery.
The exhibition will feature approximately 250 objects, with a significant focus on Marie Antoinette's personal jewellery collection. Among the highlights are a stunning natural pearl and diamond pendant, which fetched a staggering US$36 million at auction in 2018, and the exquisite Sutherland riviere diamond necklace. This necklace, adorned with 20 large brilliant-cut diamonds, is believed to contain gems linked to the infamous Affair of the Diamond Necklace scandal, a pivotal moment in Marie Antoinette's legacy.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to see a replica of the Boehmer and Bassenge diamond necklace, originally commissioned for the queen but famously associated with scandal and misfortune. The exhibition delves into the rich history behind these pieces, revealing not only their beauty but also the complex narratives that shaped the queen's life and her enduring legacy in fashion and jewellery.
Curator Sarah Grant emphasises that this exhibition is not just about showcasing opulence but also about exploring the profound cultural impact of Marie Antoinette's style. Through interactive displays and rare loans from the Château de Versailles, the exhibition will connect past and present, illustrating how her sartorial choices continue to inspire contemporary designers.
