Lucara unveils rare 37ct blue diamond in Botswana

Lucara Diamond Corp has announced the recovery of an exceptional 36.92-carat blue diamond from its Karowe Mine in Botswana, reinforcing the site’s reputation as one of the world’s richest sources of rare and high-quality gems.

The vivid TypeIIb blue stone—described as “stunning” by Lucara—was retrieved through advanced X-ray transmission technology from ore stockpiles, avoiding potential damage during crushing. The Vancouver-based miner said the find showcases the continued value of its surface reserves, which have also yielded five stones over 100carats so far this year.

Lucara CEO WilliamLamb hailed the discovery as proof of the “special nature” of Karowe, adding that it highlights the ongoing potential of stockpile material as the company advances its underground mining development. The Karowe Underground Project aims to access deeper, higher-value sections of the orebody, extending mine operations to at least 2038, with full underground output targeted for 2028.

The discovery follows a similar 42-carat blue diamond recovered at the Cullinan mine in South Africa earlier this year, underlining a recent resurgence of notable coloured diamonds across southern Africa. (Photo courtesy: Lucara Diamond)
