The 53rd Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair (BGJF) will be held from 25 February to 1 March 2014 at the Impact Exhibition Hall, Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok, Thailand. According to the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association (TGJTA), fair organizer, the show “will be proceeding as scheduled” despite the on-going anti-government protests since last November.
On an official statement dated 10 February 2014, TGJTA president Somchai Phornchindarak said: “The street protest situation in Bangkok has calmed down significantly since the Thailand general election on 2 February, which was held successfully with miminal incidents. Street protests, peaceful and orderly, now occur only sporadically at just a few venues. Protests of this nature will not affect the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair nor the visitors coming to the Fair.
“It should be emphasized that despite international media stories to the contrary, Bangkok is not engulfed in city-wide chaos, nor has it been. For visitors, Bangkok continues to rank among the safest cities in the world.”
Under the support of the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), incentives offered to show buyers and exhibitors include free hotel accommodation for visitors invited by registered exhibitors, a waiver of the 20-percent duty for items brought in for the fair, alternative insurance prepared by TGJTA for exhibitors in cases where their trips are not covered by respective insurers.
Security and safety of the fair and show-goers is of paramount importance, said TGJTA, who will monitor the situation in the Thai city and keep all show attendees fully informed of the news.
