HK jewellery boom signals strong retail recovery

Hong Kong’s luxury retail sector continued its robust resurgence in June, driven by strong local earnings and a steady influx of inbound tourists.

According to figures released by the Census and Statistics Department on 4 August, monthly revenue from jewellery, watches, clocks, and valuable gifts jumped 20 percent year-on-year to HK$5.49 billion. The high−end market comfortably outperformed the broader retail sector, which expanded by 4.6 percent to HK$31.5 billion over the same period.

The resilient performance marks a sustained rally for luxury in the territory. Following a turning point in mid-2025 after prolonged downturns, the sector has recorded consecutive growth every month since, peaking at 27.2 percent in March 2026. Cumulative hard-luxury sales for the first half of the year reached HK$31.07 billion, up 25 percent compared to the corresponding period last year.

A government spokesperson attributed the broad-based momentum to steady economic expansion, rising domestic wages, and an ongoing rebound in visitor arrivals. However, officials urged caution, highlighting potential downside risks posed by external global economic uncertainties.

Industry analysts note that while growth has moderated slightly from May’s surge, high-value discretionary spending—particularly on fine jewellery—remains a principal driver restoring Hong Kong’s position as Asia's premier luxury shopping destination. (Photo courtesy: Harbour City)
