Gaetano Cavalieri, CIBJO President released a special report covering the organisation’s activities and industry agenda during the occasion of CIBJO Congress 2015 held in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. The report highlighted the importance of supporting SMEs in the jewellery trade among other issues.
Cavalieri draw the industry’s attention to challenges faced by SMEs that were slowing driving them out of business, which include difficulty in securing steady rough supply, limited access to bank financing and the reluctance or inability of the younger generation to inherit existing family businesses.
Also addressed in the report is the CIBJO / Branded Trust CSR compliance system that was launched last year to help companies to achieve and manage social compliance, develop risk management policies and carry out social reporting.
Another major issue brought up in the report was the disclosure of treated or synthetic gemstones. A conference on the ethics of grading reports and laboratories was held on 4 May during the congress.
